Literacy: During our Book of the Week Read Aloud, students follow along using Core Vocabulary and Fringe boards adapted to their unique abilities. Each Book has a 2-3 Core word focusses that students are practicing. Read Aloud Activities - Mortimer: Students are working on the words "go" and "stop". As we read the story, students play their selected instrument when Mortimer sings "Clang- clang Rattle Bing Bang" (teacher says "go"). Students stop playing their instruments when one of their peers uses a voice output device to say "stop". - Community Helpers: We will be working on role playing during our Community Helpers unit, taking on the role of doctor, cashier, mail person, firefighter, bus driver etc. Students will work on authentic communication with a balanced focus on sign language and core picture cards. Journals: We also have a weekly journal program where students choose photos of themselves engaged in class work and paste a sentence below their photo using Core vocabulary and Fringe. We have begun to put pictures of their peers in their journal folders so that students can practice using the word "you" in their writing. Numeracy: Using the themes of each book of the week, students will be working on the following skills: -puzzles of their ability level -matching and sorting activities -Basic counting skills -Basic patterning skills -Basic measurement skills -social counting games Science: We'll be focussing on a Seeds, Planting, Growth and the Butterfly Life Cycle this month. Our class has received our order of caterpillars! We will spend the month observing the caterpillars and learning about their life cycle. Life Skills: Our life skills program involves two elements between which students rotate: 1. Cooking: We are learning to make items that can be made with the basil form our class garden. Students are making, bruschetta, tomato and cucumber salad and garden salad. We are focussing on making requests, following instructions, interacting with peers, slicing, spreading, and washing dishes. 2.Life Skills Task Bins: During this period, students develop the following skills: -folding towels and t-shirts, sorting cutlery, sweeping, sorting coins, and washing dishes. We continue to work on speech and language throughout our program, as well as fine motor task bins, a calendar program, music circle (instrument, rhythm and vocal) and our IEP goals.
